It’s Christmas time! / Il-Milied it-Tajjeb! (Merry Christmas!)
Christmas in Malta is full of sunshine and good times! Here on the island you will find a wide range of activities for you to enjoy a unique experience during this magical season. At this time of year every single one of our beautiful churches, local houses, streets and boulevards will be decorated with delightful lights, exquisite nativity cribs and majestic Christmas trees.
There are many amazing events spread across Malta and Gozo this Christmas time! Whether you are discovering hand-made gifts at Christmas markets or just admiring the lights and the warm atmosphere while hiking across the crooked old streets of Valletta or Mdina; all the ingredients are in place to assure an unforgettable experience that will surely amaze you.
1. Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem
December 13th - January 5th
Ever felt curios about how life was in biblical times? Travel to the past, to a time before Facebook, Netflix and Instagram. This village in Gozo will be transformed into a human-scale nativity crib where more than 150 actors and actresses will take visitors back in time to Judea, 2000 years ago, in an experience that has captivated thousands of visitors in the past ten years!
2. Natalis Notabilis
December 11th - 15th
During this time of the year, Christmas villages and markets flourish all around Malta and Gozo. Especially remarkable is Natalis Notabilis, the largest Christmas market which will be held in the centre of Rabat, close to the renowned and historic capital of Malta, the city of Mdina. There are more than 80 stalls where you and your friends will appreciate handcrafted gifts and artisan food and drinks (of course the traditional mulled wine could not be missing), as well as Carol Concerts and theatrical street performances.
3. Eco-Christmas Market
December 21th - 22th
The Eco-market at Valletta Waterfront offers a new Christmas shopping experience from an environmentally friendly point of view. The market will also host a series of interesting talks, workshops, social gatherings, music, art and entertainment, all aimed towards raising awareness about safeguarding our precious environment. If you are looking for more sustainable ways to start the New Year, this is the event you shouldn’t miss.
4. Christmas Rocks the Astra
December 27th
The Gozo Youth Orchestra, in collaboration with 7 Star Pyramid Productions presents Christmas Rocks the Astra, a tribute to the legendary band from The Beatles, taking place at Teatru Astra in Victoria, Gozo. The orchestra will be joined by ‘Cash and Band’, along with a number of popular soloists. Very well-known and funky local musicians and vocalists will also participate during this event, including, Danny Magro (guitar), Kurt Cassar, Ludwig Galea, Cheryl Balzan, and Sarah Bonnici. Come and live a different Christmas, have a shake and burn off your Christmas dinner!
5. New Year’s Eve at Valletta Waterfront
Where better than the astounding Valletta Waterfront to end year? Enjoy Live bands, animations and the famous Maltese fireworks whilst overlooking Valletta's historic port and fortifications. A pleasure for the eyes to start 2020 off on the right foot...
